  • Bharti Airtel to launch internet TV soon

BUS28Business/TechnologyBharti Airtel to launch internet TV soonKolkata, Oct 13 IANS Bharti Airtel Ltd, which has already started a trial run of its proposed internet protocol television IPTV services in New Delhi, is planning its commercial launch in six cities soon, a top official said here Monday."We are currently covering 1,000 households in New Delhi on a pilot basis. Issues like infrastructure capabilities and different pricing models are being tried there," Atul Bindal, president of Telemedia Services of the company, told reporters on the sidelines of the launch of Airtel's direct-to-home DTH service in Kolkata. As IPTV service would require high speed broadband connection, Airtel would restrict itself to metros like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad, where the broadband speed is 8 mbps mega byte per second.IPTV service essentially carries broadcast content over the internet. However, Bindal refused to divulge the date of the IPTV launch."We will soon be having services like IPTV, DTH, landline telephone and mobile telephony. Various combo packages are being worked out," he said. For IPTV services, Airtel is eyeing its 2.5 million Telemedia customers, both landline and broadband users. The recent issue of guidelines for downloading IPTV content by the information and broadcasting ministry has prodded the company to aggressively work on its IPTV service launch, Bindal said.--Indo-Asian News Serviceag/sj/jg234 Words13101814

  • Berlin, Oct 13 DPA Germany is to inject 70 billion euros $95 billion into the banking system this week as part of a rescue plan for the world economic system, officials said Monday.

BUS23BusinessGermany to inject $95 bn in finance rescue schemeBerlin, Oct 13 DPA Germany is to inject 70 billion euros $95 billion into the banking system this week as part of a rescue plan for the world economic system, officials said Monday. Up to 400 billion euros more would be offered in government guarantees. A copy of the draft legislation obtained by DPA indicates Germany will set up a government fund that will inject money into the banks while accepting troubled assets from the banks as security. Germany's finance ministry would be authorised to borrow 70 billion euros for the plan, both to cover a liquidity injection for the banks and to take over tainted securities. The proposed Financial Market Stabilisation Fund will require government credit, increasing Germany's net public borrowing. Securities, mainly derivatives, which had been on the banks' books until, but not after, Monday this week could be taken off the hands of the financial institutions by the fund. The banks would be required to show they were pursuing "careful" business plans and the government would have power to set caps on their executive pay. In addition the draft bill authorises the German state to guarantee interbank trading. The Finance Ministry would also have the power to extend guarantees totalling 400 billion euros up to Dec 31, 2009. Banks would have to pay a fee of 2 percent per annum for such guarantees. Sources said German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the two leading Social Democrats in her coalition government had agreed on the basics of the plan, with the next move being to discuss it in cabinet. The details of the plan is expected to be released later Monday. The two Social Democrats, Finance Minister Peer Steinbrueck and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, will be key in securing parliamentarians' support for a rapid passage of the bill. Together, Merkel's Christian Democrats and the Social Democrats have an overwhelming majority in the Bundestag lower chamber. Merkel was expected to address the media at 3 p.m. 1300 GMT with her remarks to be broadcast live on all-news television.--DPAsnb/dkg384 Words13101636

  • Peru's president accepts resignation of entire cabinet

INT50International/PoliticsPeru's president accepts resignation of entire cabinetLima, Oct 11 DPA Peru's President Alan Garcia accepted the resignations of his entire cabinet in the face of a brewing corruption scandal over petroleum concessions. "This cabinet will leave with their heads high, and Peru will reflect on the good work that they have contributed," Garcia said Friday after accepting the resignations. "The road ahead of us is wide open." The president praised his 16 departing ministers, calling their decision to resign a "noble political gesture" adding they were "momentarily trapped in the political whirlpool, which is the result of plots, appetites and passions". Garcia called attention to several social policy achievements of the cabinet, headed by President of the Council of Ministers Jorge del Castillo, since it took office in July 2006. At a ceremony regarding the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum that Peru will host next month, del Castillo announced that Garcia had accepted the resignations, heading off a censure vote in Congress. "We are leaving with our faces clean, held high, proud of our reputations," said del Castillo, who characterised his government as "serious, stable, responsible, that fulfills its commitments". Castillo lamented the ouster and denied any part in the corruption scandal, saying: "This is how politics works." The scandal erupted Sunday, when a television programme broadcast audio tapes in which two members of the ruling party solicited a kickback of five petroleum lots from the Norwegian firm Discover Petroleum International. Political analysts said Garcia was forced to dump the cabinet to avoid a certain vote of censure, but speculated that he would name a new cabinet with several of those same ministers reinstated in their portfolios.--DPAsnb/jg300 Words11101818

  • Messages beamed to "Earth-like" planet 20.5 light years away by Bebo

London, Oct 10 ANI: A digital time capsule was beamed in a high-powered radio wave in the direction of Gliese 581c, an "Earth-like" planet 20.5 light years away, with messages on board that were chosen by Bebo, a youth-orientated social networking site.According to a report in the Telegraph, the message flew past Mars within four minutes of being broadcast from the gigantic RT-70 radio telescope, but won't reach its destination until 2029.It includes images of landmarks such as the London Eye and Edinburgh Castle, along with pictures of famous faces including Hillary Clinton, George W Bush, and television presenters Richard and Judy. There are also hundreds of notes written by Bebo members about their lives, ambitions and views of Earth. The messages included in the digital capsule were selected by an online vote. One message reads, "I wish I could be alive to see the day contact between the two worlds is made, I've been born way too early."Oli Madgett, who has been running the 'A Message From Earth' project for Bebo, said he hoped that any aliens living on Gliese 581c would be impressed with the notes "We've spent years developing this, and I'm really pleased we've reached this stage.""Over half a million people have got involved and been really enthusiastic about uploading their messages onto Bebo, which has been great to see," said Madgett. According to Madgett, "I think it has really captured people's imaginations and made them think about our own planet Earth and humanity's impact upon it. I hope whoever's out there is impressed by what Earth has to offer."Gliese 581c, which was discovered last year, has a radius that is 1.5 times the Earth's. Scientists have estimated that its average temperature is between 0 and 40 C, meaning that water would exist in a liquid state - one of the essential ingredients for life as we know it. ANI
